Holocaust Memorial Day

On Friday 25th January, I was honoured to join the Holocaust Commemoration Service at the Memorial Gardens of Loweswood Museum, hosted by Broxbourne Borough Council ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January. This is the anniversary of the 1945 liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland, where more than a million people were killed by the Nazi regime. Holocaust Memorial Day is a time to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. The theme for this year’s events was ‘Torn from Home’. It was a poignant and moving service, with readings and speeches from the Leader of the Council, Mark Mills-Bishop, Mayor of Broxbourne, Carol Crump and the Lord-Lieutenant to name a few. There was also wonderful music performed beautifully by local students from St Catherine’s Primary School and Mayhew Theatre Arts. Guests and members of the congregation were invited to lay a pair of shoes during the ceremony, which will be donated to Oxfam after the event.
